The group relied on its holding company, China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co (COSCO), as its major client.

More than two-thirds of Florens' containers were leased to COSCO, keeping the company's containers full.

'Our almost single-client practice enables us to cut management costs,' Mr Luk said.

'Dealing with COSCO spares us from the expenditure of storing the unoccupied containers as well as cutting costs on transporting the containers to the designated clients.

'Also, our long-term leasing, which spans for a minimum of 10 years, guarantees a stable income.' Despite the benefits of the existing arrangement, Mr Luk said attempts had been made to lower the proportion of containers leased to COSCO and to compete for other carriers.

Though diversification might imply higher costs in running the business, Mr Luk was confident it would not shrink Florens' profit margin.

On the contrary, the company would become more profitable and competitive in the long run.

Florens Group director, and vice-president of COSCO, Cao Zang, said COSCO would increase its fleet with six new 5,250 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) vessels this year.

The expansion would provide Florens with an additional order of 78,750 containers.

Mr Cao estimated Florens would have a 20 per cent surge in turnover this year as shipping business was thriving with China's robust economic growth.

The group was considering plans to diversify into shipping-related business.

It had engaged in a $28 million joint venture to launch a container manufacturing plant in Shanghai.

The consortium was composed of German, Chinese and Hong Kong capital.

The factory was due to operate in June next year and was expected to produce 10,000 units during its first year of operation.

Mr Cao said container prices had been rising along with steel prices.

Higher costs forced the company to raise its leasing charges by five per cent for the standard dry freight containers and 1.5 per cent for refrigerated containers.

Mr Cao said the new container manufacturing plant would secure Florens with a stable supply of cheaper containers.
